How is a wireless call transmitted and why are new towers needed?
The radiowave is transmitted by antennas
in the wireless telecommunications network. Signals
are received and processed by the wireless phone. The strength
and distribution of the signal is a function of height and location
of the transmitting antenna.
There are two main reasons why new wireless
telecommunications facilities are built. The first reason
is for coverage. A wireless carrier may need to construct a new
site because they do not have service in a given geographical area. If
there is a gap in the network such that the wireless phone moves
out of the range of the originating antenna, without simultaneously
moving into the range of another antenna, service is disconnected.
New towers are required to fill in gaps in the network coverage
where opportunities for rooftop locations do not exist or are not
technically feasible.
The second reason, new wireless telecommunications
facilities are built for capacity. As the demand for wireless telecommunications
service increases and more uses access the new tower, additional
sites are required to handle the load by maintaining or improving
the quality of service to the public. When wireless networks
near capacity, the area that wireless sites cover is made smaller
and additional sites are constructed to handle the increase user
demand.
Why does TELUS require a new telecommunications installation in
Lincoln Park?
Due to redevelopment in Lincoln Park, TELUS is required to remove
an existing telecommunications tower located at 5115 Crowchild Trail
SW (ATCO Trailer Site) To ensure the integrity of the existing network
is not compromised and sufficient wireless coverage in this community
is provided once this tower is removed, a new installation is necessary.
Among the factors considered in the site relocation process are:
- Existing
coverage expectations of area residents and individuals travelling
through the community and along major transportation routes.
- Local
terrain
- Interaction with adjacent facilities
- Possibilities for co-locational opportunities with other
Carriers
- Line-of-sight requirement for high quality wireless telecommunications
- The availability of a landlord
Is location important?
Yes, a properly situated wireless site will:
- Minimize the overall height of the
structure while meeting the Engineering coverage objectives
- Provide better wireless phone and data services to current
and future subscribers in the area
- Provide wireless access to emergency services
Existing 55m Lincoln Park (ATCO Trailer) site
to be removed.

from the ATCO Trailer site as illustrated in Blue. The Red line depicts
the coverage area's once the site is relocated.
